[Korea] Hahoe & Yangdong named UNESCO World Heritage

Hahoe and Yangdong, two historic villages in Korea recently received recognition as UNESCO (United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Sites. The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea applied for the designations during the 34th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in Brasilia, Brazil on July 31st, 2010.

According to UNESCO, Hahoe and Yangdong are representative of Korea’s distinctive aristocratic Confucian culture and the social structure of the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910). The arrangement and harmony of the main buildings ((Jeongja (pavilion), Jeongsa (place for study and relaxation) and Seowon (school)) also serve to reflect the era’s traditional culture and architectural development. The International Cultural Heritage Committee went on to say that the two villages’ preservation and time-honored history was more than enough to qualify the areas as World Cultural Heritage Sites. The Committee also commended the villages for their well-preserved artworks, collection of writings & poems and other academic achievements of Confucians scholars, along with such intangible cultural assets as Community Nori, Sesipungsok (seasonal customs), and traditional ceremonies that have been handed down from generation to generation.

The recent designation of Hahoe & Yangdong as UNESCO World Heritages is extraordinarily significant to Koreans since the villages have long since been known for their living history and important past. The harmonious coexistence of nature, life, and tradition at the villages has finally been acknowledged worldwide.

In partnership with Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government and other related agencies, the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea will hold a variety of events to celebrate the deep cultural value of these recently designated sites. In the future, the Administration plans to provide a range of long-term and short-term policies to assist residents in proactively preserving the village and related cultural heritages in the region.
