Ancient Tomb Paintings from the late Goguryeo
The National Museum of Korea will be holding a special exhibition titled “Gangsejungmyo Sasindo (강서중묘 사신도),” featuring a reproduction of paintings drawn inside of Gangseojungmyo, a stone chamber tomb dating back to the latter part of the Goguryeo Period (BC 37 - 668 AD). The exhibition will be held in the Goguryeo Chamber of the Prehistoric & Ancient History Gallery at the museum from August 17th to November 28th.
Gangseojungmyo is an ancient tomb whose cultural value is so deeply acknowledged worldwide that it has been designated a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. It is a stone chamber tomb that measures 8.5 meters high and is comprised of Neolgil (the pathway into the tomb) and Neolbang (the main room). Inside Neolbang, drawings on the granite walls and ceiling depict the four gods Cheongryong, Baekho, Jujak and Hyeonmu, the heavenly lotus, and the sun and the moon.
The life-sized reproductions of the paintings have recently been retouched using a special preservation process. Projections of paintings from other Goguryeo tombs will also be presented along with the paintings of the four gods of Gangseojungmyo.
