Namsan park-gil

Namsan (남산) is a mountain rising 243m above sea level and home to the famed N Seoul Tower, known in part for its terrific view of Seoul. Other major attractions in Namsan include: the Palgakjeong pavilion, a signal fire place, the National Theater of Korea (국립중앙극장), the Namsan Library (남산도서관), Namsangol Hanok Village (남산골한옥마을), and the Namsan Cable Car.

N Seoul Tower is one of Seoul’s most popular attractions. Not only does it provide visitors with a breath-taking view of Seoul, but the area around the base of the tower has modern conveniences like restaurants, and cafeterias. Visitors to the N Seoul Tower and the surrounding Namsan area will not only discover more about Korea’s rich history, but will have the chance to enjoy the beauty of nature as well.

DIRECTIONS
From Exit #6 of Dongguk Univ. Station, walk straight up the incline. As you go up the incline, take the first street (100m from exit) that branches off to the left, following that street until it ends (360m later), at which point you’ll turn left. Walk along the sidewalk for 320m until you hit the next main road. From this point, turn right and walk straight for 125m until the road splits. Although you’ll want to follow the road that branches off to the left, follow the sidewalk off to the right to get to the crosswalk (50m or less). If you reach the tunnel, you’ve missed the crosswalk and gone too far.

Keep following the sidewalk along the main road for 450m. They’ll be a stone wall that runs along the road on the opposite side of the street and on your side of the street you’ll see a statue and a small park, after which there’ll be a staircase leading up to the National Theater of Korea. If you go out the theater the same way you came in, continuing walking down the street in the same direction, turning right at the next road on your right. Go up the hill, until the road splits, at which point you’ll take the wooded road off to the left (as opposed to the road on the right towards the buildings). At the beginning of the pathway they’ll be a sign to the right, which may give you a more detailed lay of the land. Keep going straight along the red pathway next to the main road. Approximately 150m later, there will be a wide path going off to the right, but you’ll want to continue going straight (leftish) along the road. As the sidewalk ends, stay to the left-hand side of the double yellow line, as this is the lane for walkers. Depending on the season and time of day, you’ll see a number of other joggers and hikers, so just follow their lead. 800m further, there are restroom facilities.

Continue following along the main road. As you near N Seoul Tower (more than 1km later) you’ll come across a bus parking lot, at which point you’ll want to follow the road at the far left of the parking lot, near the storefronts. Once again, this road is divided into two sections: one for cars and one for pedestrians. Stay on the left-hand side of the double yellow line, as this is the pedestrian path. 80m up, on the right side of the road, there will be a road going up on a steep incline up toward the tower. From this point, it’s only 150m to the tower and Palgakjeong Pavilion (팔각정), located on the side of the tower facing the cable cars. To get to your next destination, you may either return to the main road (as marked) or take the stairs down from the side of the tower facing the cable cars. Both paths will lead you out to the same point and both paths are pretty much a straight shot, with the cable car path (700m) being a little shorter and more difficult to follow than the path along the main road (1.2km).

After following the main path along the road, the scenery will change drastically from woods to a cityscape and the path that you had been following will lead you out to a small intersection. Bear to the right and follow the street as it loops past the Namsan Library (남산도서관) (also the home of the Samsuni Steps (삼순이계단), which became famous after the ending scene of the drama ) and the Namsan Fountain (남산분수대). The fountain is located to the right of the large parking lot 230m up from the intersection. After visiting the fountain, return to the parking lot and go straight down the stairs (50m) to the main road, known as Sopa Street. Turn right and follow the main road, passing the Namsan Cable Cars (350m on your left). As you follow along the stone wall to your right, you’ll see a number of quaint cafés and shops to your left. Continue following the road downhill, going straight along the main road at each intersection. After roughly 650m, the road will become six lanes and split. You will need to cross the road if you’re still following the sidewalk on the right, so that you can follow the road to the left. Approximately 20m from the major split in the road, the road will fork again, at which point you’ll need to take the right-hand branch (the road to the right of Sejong Hotel). Use the crosswalk to cross over and follow the pinkish sidewalk to the left-hand side of the right branch of the road.

Come down the hill (75m) and go straight towards Outback (do not turn down the road on your left). Cross the main street using the crosswalk directly in front of the Outback and follow the road straight (350m) until you see Exit #5 of Chungmuro subway station. Go down into the station, cross over, and come out Exit #4. When you come out of Exit #4, make a U-turn. The entrance to the Namsan Hanok Village is less than 50m on your right (the first street after making your u-turn from exit 4). The traditional doorway/gate will be visible from the main road.
