If you are in Seoul and you want to do some shopping, there are some places you simply cannot miss, particularly Namdaemun and Myeongdong-gil, the hottest spot for shoppers in Seoul. Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) is the quintessential Korean marketplace, where vendors display a variety of clothes, folk items, local products, agricultural produce, and food at bargain prices. The place is always crowded and lively with merchants calling out to potential buyers.
Other stops along the way (Samick Fashion Town, MESA) offer a more modern-day shopping experience, selling all the latest fashions for teens and young adults. For those seeking only the top luxury brands (or those looking to lighten their wallet) the Shinsegae Department Store and the Lotte Department Store are just the places to go. Migliore on the other hand, is a moderately priced mall selling trendy items from designers new in the business. ZARA is a favorite for its selection of styles and sizes, making it a favorite among international visitors. Noon Square is another shopping center that combines the convenience of gourmet eateries with excellent entertainment facilities. |
DIRECTIONS As soon as you exit out of Exit #5 of Hoehyeon Station (Subway Station Line 4), you’ll find yourself at the entrance of the Namdaemun Market (남대문시장). Just turn to the right and start walking and you’ll find yourself surrounded by a myriad of street vendors selling apparel, souvenirs, accessories, and more. Walk straight for approximately 250meters to the 6th side street on your right and turn right. Continue straight for 200m to Samick Fashion Town (삼익패션타운), which will be on the right-hand side of the street. It is a large yellow and white building with the words “Samick Fashion Town” written in English across the front. (There is also an information booth along this portion of the walking path before Samick Fashion Town, so feel free to stop and get some free information or directions.)

To get to your next destination, continue going in the same direction you had been previously. Mesa (메사) is right next to Samick Fashion Town along the right-hand side of the road (50m of less, depending on which door you exit from). It’s a light-colored building with an orange sign that reads “mesa” in white lettering. Keep going straight until the road curves (50m or less). There will be 3-5 crosswalks along the curve alone! Instead of following the curve, go straight the down the smaller road to the left of the Shinsegae Department Store (신세계백화점) sign. At the end of the small street (130m later), there is a large 4-way intersection. You will need to use the pedestrian underpass around the corner on your left (20m around the bend) to cross. The underpass will bring you out at “Daeyeongak Tower (대연각타워).” Keep going straight from the exit of the underpass until you see Migliore, a large tan building on your left (right next to Exit #5 of Myeongdong Station). To continue on to M Plaza, take the first left after going back out the front doors of Migliore (right past Exit #6 of Myeong-dong Station where you’ll see the box office for the Cinus Myeongdong). After crossing the first crossroads, you’ll see M Plaza on your right, featuring store like Zara and H&M, popular stores among international shoppers.
From M Plaza, keep going straight about 115m, turning left at the third street on your left (including the one right near the M Plaza). Go approximately 150m straight until you come out onto Noon Square. At the main intersection, go right and continue walking for roughly 125m until you see the large Lotte Department Store on your left simply marked “Lotte.” (At some point, you’ll need to cross the street). To get back home, go out the main entrance and turn left. Exit #7 of Euljiro 1-ga/Euljiro Ipgu is just steps away. |
