Sancheongdong-gil:Quiet roads winding alongside cafes, museums and more

here were three things in the neighborhood – mountains, water and people – that were all so beautiful and pure that the neighborhood was named “Samcheong-dong (삼청동),” which means “three clean things” in Korean. Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, just minutes from Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, is a beautiful area with quiet walking paths and a number of small art galleries, museums and antique shops located along the way.

DIRECTIONS
Go out Exit #1 of Anguk Station and continue straight (approx. 300m) past the 5-way intersection until you reach the big 4-way intersection. At the traditional guard tower at the light, turn right and walk for 5 minutes (100m) until you see the Gallery Hyundai (갤러리현대) on your right (located next to the Kumho Museum of Art (금호미술관), across from Gyeongbokgung Palace). Continue for 10-15min. (400m) until you see the Kukje Gallery (국제갤러리) (look for a yellowish-orange building on your right). Turn right past the gallery and bear to the right until you see the Jinsun Book Café (진선북카페) on your left at the crosswalk. Continue straight (200m) to reach the ToyKino Museum (토이키노 박물관). Go straight, staying to the right when the road forks; Samcheongdong Sujebi (삼청동수제비) (a dough flake soup house with 20 years of history) will be on the left-hand side of the street at the second traffic light. ‘

Stop for a quick lunch or continue on to the restaurant called ‘The Second Best Restaurant in Seoul (서울에서 두번째로 잘하는집),’ a restaurant famous for its delicious red bean soup. To get there, keep going straight (200m) following the road towards the Samcheong Tunnel (삼청터널, you will see a green sign for the tunnel written in Korean and English). The restaurant is located on the right shortly after the sign.

Next we’ll be heading to Samcheong Park (삼청공원), a wooded area with a great view of the Seoul cityscape. From the restaurant keep going straight, past the three-way intersection and up the hill (be prepared for a mini-hike!). Turn right into the park and take either of the two branches of the designated trail until you reach the exit on the other side. After exiting the park, you’ll come across Doban (도반) to your right, a traditional Korean dining house. Turn right to go to Doban or turn left to continue on to the Bukchon Museum Old Fragrance (북촌생활사박물관), a museum exhibiting the old-fashioned Korean way of life.

To continue on your journey, go straight (100m) until you hit the fork in the road, where you’ll need to bear right. Keep bearing right (there will be several forks in the road) and walk for approx. 400 meters until you reach the Bukchon Museum Old Fragrance. Keep your eyes peeled for a yellow sign with a cartoon lady (and very small English lettering) and wooden lattice work above the entrance. Continue straight (400m), passing a sign for the Silk Road Museum until you reach the World Jewelry Museum (세계장신구박물관) (there will be a small vertical rectangular sign in English on the left).

To get to the Art Sonje Center (아트선재선터) continue along the same road, until the road ends, whereat you’ll need to turn left. Continue straight until you hit the main road. The Art Sonje Center is directly across the road, only slightly to your right.

Walk down the alleyway right next to the art center (to you right, when you come out of the art center, left if you’re facing the center’s main doorway). Continue walking straight (400m), passing several schools. Eventually you will hit the main 5-way intersection where you originally began your course (look for the coffee shop Twosome Place on your left). Turn left and continue on until you reach Anguk Station.
