Joseon Dynasty relics unveiled for the first time

On August 5, 2010, the National Museum of Korea proudly opened the new Joseon Gallery, a permanent collection showcasing relics of the Joseon Dynasty.

The overarching theme of the gallery is “The Four Classes of Joseon Society (Scholars, Farmers, Artisans, and Tradesmen)"; exhibits are further divided according to periods of time and the development of the dynasty.
The gallery has about 1,100 items on display covering 252 subjects. Some pieces have never before been seen by the public eye, including the Cheugudae rain gauge pedestal of the Gwansanggam Office, which was kept at the Korea Meteorological Administration. Another piece that is making its public debut is the leopard skin of the imperial family of Daehanjeguk (the Empire of Korea), which is thought by some to have been used by Queen Myeongseong. Other main pieces include the Honcheon Clock (valued as a unique astronomical clock worldwide) and Denny's Taegeukgi (the oldest surviving taegeukgi flag).

The Joseon Gallery is part of the museum's plan to highlight Korea’s evolvement as a country throughout the ages. With the opening of the new exhibit, visitors can view the nation’s developed from the Gojoseon Era (BC2333~BC108; the first state on the Korean peninsula) to the Joseon Dynasty.
